A traumatic event can change everything.
A traumatic event is a life-threatening event or a serious threat to your sense of safety. After you experience a traumatic event, you may experience significant changes in how you view yourself, other people, and the world.
You may experience
- Flashbacks, nightmares, and physical sensations that remind you of the event
- Intense emotions like anxiety, anger, fear, guilt, or shame
- Avoidance of things that remind you of the event
- Lack of interest in doing the things you used to enjoy
- Feeling numb and disconnected
- Being hyper-alert to your surroundings; constantly scanning for danger
- Trouble sleeping
- Difficulty relaxing even when you know you are safe
These symptoms have made you so different from the person you were before. It’s hard for you to leave the house and being constantly alert is exhausting. You feel like no one in your life understands and you worry that you are going crazy. You want to be able to leave the trauma in the past and move on with your life, but something is keeping you stuck.
Find healing and move forward in life.
Trauma symptoms are normal reactions that most people have after experiencing a traumatic event. For some people these symptoms resolve in a few months but for others these symptoms stick around and may even get worse. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) occurs when something gets in the way of the natural recovery process.
PTSD can be debilitating but trauma-focused treatments are highly effective at reducing symptoms so you can get back to doing what makes you happy. Effective treatment can help you be present and feel connected to your family again.
You can feel comfortable leaving your house and being around people. You can let go of the need to control everything and have patience with your partner and kids. You can have refreshing sleep and stop living in the past.
Effective Treatment for Trauma
Evidence-based therapy at your pace.
Trauma can be hard to talk about. During intake, we will explore how the trauma is affecting you and what your goals are.
If you aren’t ready to discuss the details of your trauma, that’s ok. I will work with you to build trust and foundational tools to cope with difficult emotions before we dive into the hard stuff.
Together, we will decide when it is time to do trauma-focused work and what treatment will fit you best. I can provide Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure in Primary Care (PE-PC).
